The construction industry builds all kinds of infrastructure, including football stadiums. Some of the world’s biggest companies are also heavily involved in the clubs and are sponsors of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. Here are four examples.

Football is big business for the construction industry. Investments in the current World Cup are roughly divided 50:50 between stadiums and other infrastructure projects like airports, roads, etc.  A total of 12 stadiums have been prepared for the current World Cup in Russia.

Another 34 stadiums are currently being constructed worldwide according to “The Stadium Guide”, including five in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host. Most of the sponsors in the industry are B2C companies, like airlines, beverage producers and insurance companies but there are also examples of construction companies who sponsor football clubs, stadiums and tournaments.

Prime examples of construction industries sponsoring football

  1. Gazprom
    Gazprom extracts, produces, transports, and sales natural gas. The majority of the company is owned by the Government of Russia. Gazprom is a big sponsor of sport, including as a FIFA World Cup 2018, UEFA Champions League official partner. Gazprom’s involvement in football started with Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg. German FC Schalke, owned and sponsored by Gazprom, was the first club outside Russia to be supported by Gazprom.
  2. Wanda, Chinese conglomerate
    Wanda Group is involved in commercial management, culture, real estate and finance. Wanda Sports China is responsible for organizing the sports events of Wanda Sports in China, including triathlon, China Cup International Football Championship, Tour of Guangxi Road Cycling Race, BMX World Championships and 2019 Basketball World Championships. Wanda is sponsoring the FIFA World Cup and has sponsored Atletico Madrid’s new stadium, Wanda Metropolitano.
  3. ACS, Spain’s biggest construction company
    The ACS Group is one of the biggest construction companies in Europe. The owner, Florentino Perez, is also president of Real Madrid Football Club, winner of the European Champions League 2016-2018.
  4. RZD – long-time involvement in football
    The Russian Railways, RZD, sponsors RZD Arena, the homefield of Locomotive Moscow, founded by the Moscow-Kazan Railway in the 1920’s and sponsored by RZD. The owner of RZD, the Russian Transportation Ministry, funded the reconstruction of the stadium in 2002.
